I’m constantly on the look out for a place that is creative and bold with macarons and I am pleased to have found Dessert Truck Works on my recent trip to New York. Its popularity was boosted by an appearance on Bobby Flay’s Throwdown, where the owners made their signature bread pudding with bacon anglaise. Yes bacon. On a late evening in middle of January I made the trek out to the truck parked in East Village and tasted for myself. It was very good.
In January 2010, Dessert Truck set up shop on Clinton Street, conveniently located next to a favorite food spot of mine, Clinton St Baking Company. I was tempted to go in for the amazing blueberry pancakes but I was on a mission for macarons.

Front of the shop with a menu of some of individual desserts sold at the shop and on the mobile truck.

I tasted four flavors.
Left: Salted caramel was nice and crisp and the filling had just the right amount of salt. I also love the Asian-inspired brush stroke design on top of the macaron.
Right: Raspberry anise and Banana Caramel Monkey Finger
“Monkey Finger” was my favorite. The non-traditional shape won me over from the start and the combination of the salted caramel filling with banana shell was a fantastic combination.
Beauty shots ahead…since they were carried carefully on the plane so I had time to shoot them before devouring.

Raspberry anise was the first macaron I’ve had with a blended color shell. Gorgeous. The raspberry ganache was slightly tart which I liked but the quantity was a bit much in comparison to the macaron shell. I normally complain there is too little filling but in this case it was the opposite.

Lastly, the S’more which was a sophisticated version of the campfire treat. I initially thought the marshmallow “garnish” was odd but it was so gooey and fresh. I love how the shell was studded with graham cracker. The inside was chocolate ganache. Again a little heavy-handed but nonetheless really tasty.
Overall all four were outstanding. The salesperson said the flavors don’t change with the exception of some seasonal add-ons. I would absolutely go back for more.
