Dream Movie Kitchens: Because I Said So, Milly Wilder

April 23, 2010

With Mother’s Day coming up, I was reminded of the movie, Because I Said So, starring Diane Keaton as Daphne Wilder, the overbearing mother to daughter Milly Wilder, played by Mandy Moore.  It’s not my all time favorite romantic comedy but I find myself re-watching because both the mother and daughter, cake artist and caterer respectively, have really colorful and inviting kitchens that I would love to have.

Take a look at Milly’s culinary spaces.

Teaching a cooking class in her work kitchen for her catering company, Good Enuf to Eat.  I love the orange and lime striping that go across the room.  I also noticed the colors get picked up as well in the grated cheese and herbs on the chopping boards.

The classroom from Milly’s view.  Bright and sunny with the open doors.  Love it.

Her home kitchen with an open pantry stocked with essentials.  Organized chaos.  Seems appropriate for a caterer.

The orange and green theme carries through to the home.  Love the fridge with the chalkboard front.  Great for shopping lists and to-dos.

The opposite side of the kitchen has an urban city vibe with the brick and twinkle lights.  My favorite part is the whole side with window.

The island features a brown granite with white drawers.  Cute mod orange lamp.

Nothing new in terms of kitchen design, but I love this bit of the scene where she bakes cookies, not for her date to eat, but for the aroma, so that the room would smell like she was baking.

The wall shelf brings out the earthy, warm colors of the ceramics.  A similar idea is in Daphne’s kitchen as well.

How unfortunate that Diane’s outfit is distracting me from the shot of the entrance to the kitchen with the windows in back that I love.

Milly on the other side of the island.  Deep orange dinner plate, pitcher, and utensil bucket in back still keeps the room cheery even at night.

I’m so glad I’m not the only person who loved this movie for it’s set design!

If I didn’t make screen captures of the sets I’d probably keep re-watching just to ogle at them some more! 🙂
