Movie Cakes: Because I Said So

June 7, 2010

Now that I’ve covered the kitchens, I can’t leave out the cakes in the movie.  All the cakes were done by Los Angeles cake creators, Joanie & Leigh, otherwise known as the Cake Divas.  I remember first seeing them as contestants on an old episode of Food Network Challenge.

Here are the cake creations that are so perfectly representative of each character’s personality.

For Maggie, the oldest sibling, an elegant off white cake, the most traditional of them all.  I love the squiggly white piping that makes the cake look textured like the lace on her dress.

Mae’s cake is fun, bright, and nature-inspired.  For some reason the design reminds me of a bountiful fruit platter with big bunches of grapes and figs.  Maybe its all the vibrant purple against the yellow which reminds me of an Italian countryside.

To go with the polka dot theme in the movie, a polka dot cake for Daphne.  I like how the girls’ dresses are different polka dot patterns to match.

My favorite cake would be this birthday cake the girls made for their mother.  I love when there’s an over the top number of candles on the cake to blow out,  though probably not a happy reminder for the person whose birthday it is.

The cake from Millie’s first wedding that she catered.  I couldn’t get a good shot from the side but the cake is basically layers of fondant petals.  It’s so dramatic and beautiful.

I am turning 39 soon and would LOVE the cake made for the mom ‘Daphne’. Is there any way to get a better shot of the cake to see the side detail. I make cakes but don’t want to do my own!! Lol 🙂 Thank you.

Happy Early Birthday! I’ve updated the post with a side shot of the cake. Its pretty simple with a few large fondant flowers at the bottom with fresh petals scattered around the base. If you want a close up, shoot me an email and I can send you a larger image.

Thank you for posting these. I’m a newly graduated Pastry Chef and I’m getting married in June and I want to do something very similar to Maggies cake with all the squiggly writing. Do you have anything more close up that you could send me?

      Shellie,

Congrats! I don’t think there were any other scenes with this cake so the two I have are the closest I could get- the shot of the sides and of the top. I wish I could zoom in more on the detailing of the flowers. Good luck with the cake!
