Snow Globe Cookies

There were a lot of holiday foodie episodes to watch this past December.  I was most excited about Martha Stewart’s episode featuring holiday cookies and in particular the Snow Globe cookie.

How can you not love this cookie?

This project has a lot of decorating items, some of which I didn’t have on hand so I improvised a bit.  In the segment, they used a snow globe cookie cutter, which of course alternatively, you can use the template from the web.

My first of two sheets of snow globe cookies

First I flooded the base of the globe in a red icing.  Well it was more of a dark pink/red.  The color darkens as it sits and once the sanding sugar goes on top it looked good.  Using a squeeze tube is fantastic.  It makes icing so much easier.  I highly recommend getting some.

This recipe has some waiting time in between each step so it helps to do one step on all of them.  By the time you’re done, the first cookie will be ready for the next step.

Flooding in the sky and adding the decorations onto the wet blue icing.  I did specially order the Wilton gingerbread candies online.  Instead of red heart sprinkles, I drew hearts with leftover red icing from the snow globe base.

Sanding sugar to finish the sky.  I had raw sugar which was a little “dirty” colored.  It was transparent enough and in the end absorbed into the blue icing so I didn’t notice too much.  Though I would probably get the clear sanding sugar in the future for a cleaner look.

To make it really look like a snow globe, sprinkle white non nonpareils on top of the white icing.

After three hours…eight decorated snow globes.  It was very a therapeutic winter afternoon working on these but also would be a lot of fun to have a cookie party and have everyone make one.  That will be next year :)

Recipe Notes:

  • I made half a batch of the recipe which was enough for 8 snow globes and 6 assorted other cookies that I will post later.  I think making more than 8 by myself would have been a bit too much.
  • Refrigerate the dough overnight.  It is a sticky dough.
  • I rolled out the dough to 1/4″ thick then put the snow globes in the fridge before baking to prevent spreading. After baking, I noticed that the ones made from re-rolled dough ended up spreading still.  To really make sure they won’t, I suggest refrigerating the cut cookies overnight.
